Spectacular Welsh scenery.

54.1 Miles. Now at Rhydhalen Farm CL at Cross Inn, New Quay

Today’s trip was only just over an hour to Cross Inn so we were in no great hurry. Along the way we saw many spectacular views but unfortunately the highway authority don’t always provide off road parking places where you really want them. We did pull off the road into a car park at Lower Town, Fishguard for a few photo’s and again at the top of the hill overlooking the old Fishguard Fort.

This Fort was built in 1781 after an incident in 1779  when pirates aboard the Black Prince held a local ship to ransom. When the ransom payment was not forth coming the pirates fired their guns into Fishguard damaging a church and houses. Disabled gunners from Woolwich were employed to man the fort which only fired the 8” guns once in anger when the French Navy came within sight in 1797. The fort was closed after the end of the Napoleonic War in 1815 and left to the elements. It is now under the auspices of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority. Because the fort is on a cliff face below the road you wouldn’t know of it’s existence until you stop in the layby at the top of the hill and go for a walk.

It was while we were parked above the Fort having some lunch that a car pulled in front of us and the driver came over for a chat. It transpired he was from Australia and saw the New Zealand flag on the back of the motorhome. He is over here for a month’s holiday and was interested as to where we had been and where we were going.
